Coastal vs. inland

Zone 7 or Zone 10: the climate line that changes the equipment

California's energy code divides the county into climate zones. The two we work in most behave like different states: the right system for a house in Encinitas is often the wrong one for a house in Escondido.

Zone 7 is the coastal strip: San Diego, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Valley, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Chula Vista. Mild year-round, few cooling hours, salt air near the beach. Here the common mistakes are oversizing an air conditioner for a heat wave that lasts a week, and installing an unprotected condenser a few blocks from the ocean.

Zone 10 is the inland valleys: Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, San Marcos, Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa. Long, hot summers and attics that pass 130°F. Here cooling load is real, duct leakage is expensive, and a higher-efficiency system pays back far faster than it would at the coast.

Both zones are good heat-pump climates: winter lows across the county stay well within the range where modern heat pumps keep full capacity. Heat pumps explained.

Key points

We run a load calculation for every replacement instead of copying the old tonnage: the zone changes the answer.

Do you charge more for homes farther from your office?

No. Pricing for a replacement is based on the equipment, the scope of work and the conditions at the house, not the drive. The office in Miramar is roughly central to the county, and every area we list is within about 35 minutes.
