Smart Thermostat Installation in San Diego, Wired for Your Equipment

A thermostat is a switch with opinions. Get the wiring or configuration wrong and a good furnace short cycles, a heat pump runs its backup heat all winter, or a two-stage air conditioner never leaves low stage. We install three kinds of controls:

• Smart Wi-Fi thermostats. Schedules, remote control from your phone, usage reports and, with some models, remote room sensors. We install the major smart thermostat brands and configure them for your specific equipment.
• Communicating thermostats. Variable-speed furnaces, air handlers and inverter heat pumps often use a manufacturer's communicating control that talks to the equipment over a data bus rather than simple 24V calls. Replacing it with a generic thermostat can lock the system into a basic mode and give up the efficiency you paid for. We match the control to the equipment.
• Zoning controls. A zone panel, motorized dampers and a thermostat per zone let a two-story home in Scripps Ranch or Carlsbad heat the bedrooms at night without running the downstairs. Zoning needs a bypass strategy or variable-speed equipment to keep static pressure in check, so it is designed, not bolted on.

Compatibility checks we run before recommending a model

• C-wire. The common wire powers a Wi-Fi thermostat continuously. Many 1970s–1990s tract homes have a four-conductor cable with no spare. We pull a new cable, add an adapter at the control board or wire a C terminal that was never used.
• Heat pump O/B wiring. The reversing valve terminal. Set O for most brands, B for a few. Wrong setting, wrong mode.
• Staging. Two-stage furnaces and ACs need W2/Y2 terminals and the thermostat set to control them; otherwise the second stage never runs, or runs all the time.
• Backup heat and dual fuel. Heat pumps with electric strips or a gas furnace backup need the thermostat to know when to bring it on. In San Diego's climate that should be rarely.
• Line-voltage systems. Wall heaters and some older floor furnaces use millivolt or line-voltage controls that most smart thermostats cannot drive. We tell you up front.

When the thermostat is the fix, and when it is a symptom

A thermostat is the real fix when it has dead batteries, a cracked display, a loose wire, a bad temperature sensor or the wrong configuration, or when the old mercury or mechanical unit cannot run a schedule. It is a symptom when the complaint is a hot bedroom, a system that runs all day, or a furnace that cycles every few minutes. Those come from ducts, sizing or a failing part, and a new thermostat will not change them. On every thermostat visit we confirm the equipment is responding correctly before we leave, so a wiring problem does not get blamed on the new control.

Thermostats are a small line item on a system replacement, where the control is chosen to match the new equipment. As a stand-alone job they are quick, and we will say so.
